The Story & Living Heritage
Legend holds that angels assisted artisans by night to carve Lalibela in 24 years. Architecturally, it represents an intentional terrestrial Jerusalem, established when pilgrimage routes to the Holy Land were severed by conflict.
Lalibela stands as one of the world’s extraordinary sacred architectural achievements. Carved in the 12th and 13th centuries under King Lalibela, eleven monolithic and semi-monolithic churches were excavated downwards from basaltic rock terraces. This is not an archaeological museum: priests conduct daily pre-dawn liturgies, chanted in ancient Ge’ez with parchment manuscripts and brass sistra, exactly as they have for nine centuries.
